An Essential Guide to Coach in 2026

Coach is one of the best-known American fashion names, and in 2026 its sales are growing at a strong pace. At present the label sells clothing, shoes and accessories in stores worldwide, although it started out as a small leather workshop and then evolved into a handbag specialist. The guiding formula behind the brand has stayed steady for decades: leather goods of real quality, priced below the traditional European luxury houses. That space has been characterized by a federal court as accessible luxury, separate from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.

This guide sets out how Coach began, who owns and manages it, the current size of the business and what it offers. Because the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet often causes confusion, this guide clarifies that too. The numbers are dated to their sources, and any prices are observed market prices rather than an official price list.

From a Manhattan Workshop to an American Fashion Name

Coach traces its roots to 1941, when a small family-run leather workshop was established in Manhattan. In Coach’s own account, six artisans labored in a loft on 34th Street, making wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods aimed at men. Handbags came later, and so did the Coach name, which goes back to about 1960 or 1961. Miles and Lillian Cahn were never the founding owners of the workshop, although the couple is sometimes incorrectly described that way.

The Cahns came into the business in 1946, and by around 1950 Miles was overseeing the factory. The Cahns took control in 1961, when they purchased the interests of the original owners. According to reports, it was Lillian Cahn who came up with the idea of adding women’s handbags, which would redefine the company. Recognition for glovetanned leather goes to Miles Cahn; the finish is inspired by the way a worn baseball couch outlet store glove grows softer with use.

Bonnie Cashin and Her Coach Years

Bonnie Cashin, Coach’s first lead designer, is the designer most strongly associated with early Coach. Reportedly, she was engaged on a contract basis and not as an employee, and she was never a co-founder. Her exact start date is slightly unclear, because Coach’s own pages give it as both 1961 and 1962. It is not in doubt, however, that she continued designing for Coach until 1974.

In 1964 Cashin introduced the brass turnlock closure, which Coach says was inspired by the toggle on the top of her convertible. Cashin is also credited with side pockets, coin-purse details and brighter colors, all of which livened up the brand’s look. Today, the turnlock is still one of the most distinctive Coach details, appearing on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.

New Owners, a Public Listing and the Arrival of Tapestry

In July 1985, Coach was acquired by Sara Lee Corporation. Coach’s initial public offering followed in October 2000, with Sara Lee reportedly exiting completely the following year. Far from being a mid-century heritage motif, the “C” monogram is a modern addition: Coach launched its Signature collection featuring it in 2001. On 31 October 2017, Coach, Inc. was renamed Tapestry, Inc., and its stock symbol switched from COH to TPR.

Only the parent company took on a new name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept theirs. Stuart Weitzman, which Coach, Inc. had acquired in 2015, passed from Tapestry to Caleres in a deal that closed on 4 August 2025. In 2026, Tapestry’s stable includes only two brands, Coach and Kate Spade, Coach being by far the more substantial of the two.

The Blocked Capri Takeover

Tapestry revealed on 10 August 2023 that it had agreed to purchase Capri Holdings, the parent of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. The Federal Trade Commission opposed the deal in April 2024 and asked a federal court to block it with a preliminary injunction. The preliminary injunction the agency sought was granted on 24 October 2024 by a federal judge in the Southern District of New York. It was not a final ruling on the merits, but it barred the companies from closing while the challenge was ongoing.

The court’s decision acknowledged the existence of an accessible luxury handbag market, separate from both mass-market bags and true luxury. Tapestry and Capri terminated their agreement on 14 November 2024, saying the legal process was unlikely to be completed before their February 2025 deadline. The acquisition was never completed, so Tapestry owns no Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.

Coach’s Leadership Right Now

Tapestry, the parent company, is led by its chief executive, Joanne Crevoiserat. Todd Kahn runs the brand itself as Coach’s CEO and brand president, a post he took on an interim basis in July 2020 and took on permanently in April 2021. The creative lead is Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was announced in June 2013.

Vevers’s debut collection for Coach was reportedly unveiled in February 2014, and he is still in place as Coach’s creative director in 2026. His route to Coach reportedly ran through Mulberry and then Loewe, where he served as creative director. Under his direction, Coach has drawn on its archive, reviving older designs and recasting vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. New York’s Cunard Building hosted the show of his Fall 2026 collection on 11 February 2026.

The Figures Behind Coach

For the sharpest picture of Coach’s scale, look to Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026. Coach’s net sales rose 24% on the prior year to $6,914.7 million, whereas Tapestry as a whole posted $8,004.2 million. Coach, put simply, produced approximately 86% of group sales.

Coach’s count of directly operated stores came to 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 internationally. Some sources cite about 1,299 stores, but this count counts all Tapestry stores, not Coach alone. Tapestry also said the average unit retail price of Coach handbags increased at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. The company has linked that rise partly to fewer promotions.

Coach’s Product Range: Handbags, Clothing and Footwear

The core of the business is still handbags, and the current coach handbags blend structured icons with soft, slouchy leather. Built on a 1970s archive shape, the Tabby arrived in 2019; the Rogue first appeared in 2016 and returned in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, followed in August 2024. The Empire Carryall was first seen on the Fall 2024 runway ahead of its release in February 2025. Prices spanned a wide range: the Kisslock Frame Bag, said to have opened the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350, and a Rogue 25 in alligator was seen at $8,000, the highest bag price observed. The Coach Originals line revives archive designs as newly made bags, so those pieces are not vintage.

Ready-to-wear now plays a serious role in the offer: coach clothing for Fall 2026 included varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. The same show added blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. For footwear, there are sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker, while fashion press mentioned loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall. Coach also runs Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and said to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, plus Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand launched on 20 April 2023.

Where to Shop: Coach Store, Coach Outlet and Online

The current collections are carried by a full-price coach store, while the biggest flagships go by the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly opened in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as slated for 2027. London’s Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and in the UK the brand sells through Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis as well. Whether you want a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket, the full-price range is the place to shop the latest season.

Coach Outlet is Coach’s own official sales channel, made up of outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. A 2014 quote from Coach’s head of investor relations placed the share of outlet merchandise made for the outlet channel at around 85%, yet that figure is now dated, and Tapestry has since raised the idea of bringing some full-price product into outlets. Claims that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags, go beyond the public evidence. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet all have UK outlet stores. Since a search for the brand may be typed as “couch” or “cosch”, make sure that any site offering huge discounts is truly Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
